Last Experimental….. Beta 1 Looms.
March 8, 2011 55 CommentsToday will be the last Experimental build of VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition…. you can pick it up over on the Experimental page. I am almost ready to call this a Beta but wanted one more Experimental build to work out any final pre-Beta type bugs. So what is working? Well pretty much everything… LOL. I think we finally got the Main Market issues worked out… should see just about everything now. YOU MUST INSTALL THE LATEST GAPPS from here: http://goo-inside.me/gapps/latest/7/universal/ . This has ONLY been tested with a FULL DATA WIPE, so if you are still having issues that may be your only option.
So what has changed? A lot since the last build.
Merged up to 2.3.3 Gingerbread…. that was a chore had to rebase and rebuild my entire repo as something wasn’t jiving.
Merged in the TNT 3991 Libs…. the Ventana ones are not useful yet unfortunately.
Created a more tablet friendly lockscreen no more slide tabs on the side…. they are now on the bottom landscape wise as they should… and don’t look phone like any more.
Statusbar improvements:
- Battery Percent graphics
- Matching Wifi graphics
- Added some full color icons for the statusbar power widget the status bar itself
- Modified Statusbar Pulldown to better fit with theme (added a slight alpha to it and changed some elements to black)
Added in fake ril to help with Market Issues (ATM Phone stuff has to remain or it may break market) But I removed all of their icons from the launcher…. so unless you actually go to Settings/Manage Applications you will not know they are there.
Changed the (no service) text to VEGAn-TAB so we are not constantly reminded that we don’t have phone parts….
Removed RomManager, PacMan(auto market installer) as they cause issues with other things.
And Lots more background things that you will not visibly notice.
The Latest Flash player from the market now works. Latest google maps still doesn’t work (this is a screw up with maps on google’s part they coded one of the layout files wrong, there is a fix but I don’t want to do it because it screws with too many other things…. better to use the old maps version for the moment). SDCard and internal memory are now handled like we are used too with the old VEGAn and TNT and several other Builds…. Internal Memory is mapped to SDCard and external SD Card is mapped to SDCard2. With nothing else installed Quadrant consistently comes in at about 2100 and a 41.45fps on Nenamark so performance is pretty decent so far.
Hopefully I will move to BETA 1 fairly quickly… there are several “Features” I am trying to work out first though so it might be a week or so.
-Enjoy!
GoJimi

Everything working well enough with the 0224 build, so i’m gonna wait for Beta 1. That said, WELL DONE, Sir! Am really enjoying your stuff. GTab working well. You have done a yeoman’s job and we do appreciate it.
You are amazing. I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate your work. I’m setting a tablet up for my parents, and without your work they would be getting an iPad (oh the horror!!!).
Sounds great GoJimi, I cannot wait. I am currently running VEGAn 5.1 and but I think I will try out the latest Experimental build.
Great work. Good to see cm7 rc2 features in the rom. it is definately better then the previous build. Love your work. and slick lock screen. Are you planning on fullynmerging with cm and will ppl be able to get nightlies?
Actually prefer this over beta 5.
Before I had my gtab, I had an Archos 70. AVOS(Archos’ Android) is almost stock froyo with native cifs, upnp, enhanced media apps, and phone parts removed. AVOS is open-source so that maybe worthwhile to look at.
Well I tried to install the latest Experimental build but it just hangs at the “Powered by G-TABDEVS” screen. I tried a full wipe/cache/dalv wipe before installation. Any ideals?
I know this is not where to post questions but though maybe it was just something I missed.
Thanks
I had same issue.
Ok it corrupted my cache so I could only boot a single time… but… it was super fast and nice to look at. Can’t wait for beta 1.
Great stuff! How about vpn support?
You rock Man…Im still really new to all this ‘freedom’ that comes from rooting and modding my android stuff, but you guys really do make the GTab a great tool once it’s been opened up. Thanks. Now if I could just talk myself into rooting my N1.
Thanks for the hard work. I will be waiting for the beta. It sounds awesome!
This is excellent ! I cannot wait for the BETA. I already have the new gingerbread background set, so I just need the ROM to match .. LOL ..
Looks great but one issue, I have many apps that does not give me a full screen, is there a place I can change that? I used to get full screen in Vegan 5.1 with all those apps like droidemulite and more but not anymore with this version. Other than that it looks fantastic.
For those stubborn apps that just don’t want to scale properly you can use the bottom most option in the Spare Parts app about compatiblity modw make sure it is unchecked and the reboot. This may make some other things scale a bit off os wise. But you can easily change it back if necessary. Really it is down to the developer of the app to make it Tablet Compatible.
Well I managed to get it installed fine but the battery would not register and it would shutdown as soon as the power cord was disconnected. It looked great but I could not continue using it without the battery working.
The battery worked fine this go around but your G-apps package is not working for me.
Also, the settings link is missing from the menu as well. I am running VEGAn-7-03082011-Experimental
Sorry to keep posting but it seems the rom installs fine and everything is great but when I install the gapps package, the setting menu entry goes missing and no gapps. Oh well, back to 5.1.1 for now but the GB build looks great. Thanks GoJimi and sorry to clutter your comments.
Comhack your issues are atypical. I have seen maybe 4 or 5 people with the original install issue you had. I would like to know the process which eventually “fixed” the install issue for you. As to the gapps not installing… one confusing part that I have noticed people having is the fact that I have removed the auto-installer that was causing some issues with market. So the only thing that is really installed with the current gapps installer is the market and it “only” shows up in the launcher when a valid google account is entered into the Tablet. That is a new addition by google in the latest market version unfortunately.
Thanks for the tip about the gapps, I am going to try the installation again. As far as the installation issues, I am not really for sure what I did different. I wiped Dalvik, Data and Cache before installation. I will report back if it works for me.
Thanks
Ok well I installed the ROM again and after boot, I made a shortcut for Settings on the desktop. Well when I installed the gapps package, the settings entry stops working and seems to be missing from the menu as well.
Same things, no settings after gapps install. I tried the tegra one and the universal gapps. Same issue on both, back to VEGAn 5.1.1.
I’m getting the same problem…….stuck on “powered by GTABDEVS” screen. I’ve reformatted everything, repartitioned, factory restore….everything. It will NOT boot. I can reinstall the older version of Vegan just fine. Any thoughts??
I’ve gone so far as to reinstall the Viewsonic original firmware, re-install CWM, and it STILL hangs (after a complete system wipe, re-partition, etc.) Thoughts? Ideas?
Just an FYI – the ONLY way I was able to get this to install was to do a factory flash via NVFLASH. Nothing else worked (repartitioning, flashing the update back to original Viewsonic firmware, etc.) Just a heads up for others who get stuck on the GtabDevs screen.
Hi,
the best Gingerbread ROM at this time
I’m running Flashplayer 10.2.155.67 until now no issue’s
Market the known FC displaying installed apps
my solution (temporally)
- install vending.apk Vers 2.2.7 run it – after a couple of seconds market closes OK!!
- after this install vending.apk Vers 2.3.4 and next all my apps are shown.
Google Maps Vers 5.2.1 starts with FC
Google Maps Vers 5.0.0 works for me.
i have tried cm6.1 beta, cm7 beta, tnt lite and the stock rom with rooting ….. yours is by far the best working ROM of these. very small issues remaining …. excellent work on this project.
any thoughts on why droidTV won’t load the TVguide during inital setup? keeps stopping with “communication error” … it only requires 480×800 resolution and runs perfectly on my HTC Desire
What about ntfs storage support in gingerbreaded veantab?
Rooted my Gtab last night to this version and LOVE it so far! Thanks for all the work you put into making it more tablet friendly/structured.
I was holding off on this build until it went beta, but after loading the new 3D launcher to my tablet, I thought “why not?”
Fantastic job, as much as I liked the Vegan 5.1, this just seems superior in every way. Everything ms to be working fine for me.
Kudos for a great job, and thanks for all the hard work.
I did extensive research on which rom to go with before I purchased the g tablet. I bought the tablet 3 days ago, and I had initially decided on the gadam, however.. It did not live up to the expectations like I had hoped. I then settled with the Vegan-Tab experimental, and this is running perfectly for me. With the older version of google maps, nothing seems to be wrong, no force closes or hang ups.
Thanks for the build guys! Can’t wait for Beta1.
The experimental release was my first experience with replacing the ROM and the install ran without a hitch. You guys did an excellent job.
Only question is where do I find the old version of google maps? Searched everywhere and can only find the current version. Can someone provide a link?
FYI. finally found a download link for Google Map 5.0. For others that may be looking:

Amazing work.. Really I wiill be donating shortly for a great cause. I purchased 3 gtabs for my family…
Any eta on Beta 1… What is your outlook on the whole honeycomb situation are we far off?
Thanks again!
I’d say since everyone is just tapping into the gingerbread software we are far far off from honeycomb…Though Honeycomb is a firmware meant for tablets so im not too sure… my guess 6months b4 devs are able to compile an experimental rom…
I hope im wrong
Any news on when VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition Beta 1 Will be released?
You Guys are awesome; The G-Tab Rocks thanks to you guys.
Tried the experimental tonight. Some great improvements! One negative. I couldn’t get the market to show my downloaded apps. I tried both methods mentioned at xda. Finally ended up having to restore back to VeganTab 5.1.1.
I used these steps for install and all was great.
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- wipe Dalvik Cache
- wipe Battery Stats
- installed Vegab-7-0382011-Experimental.zip
- installed gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip
- reboot
However, my son was playing with it and put it in airplane mode. It wouldnt come out of airplane mode.
Thanks for the info. I’ll try that out.
Tried that… still didn’t work. Same thing. The apps show up. Then I reboot or try to install an app and they are gone and it says no downloads from Android Market. Guess I’ll wait for beta and hope it works then.
Mine is doing exactly the same thing and also have pgone through all of the same steps that you have.
Glad to know I’m not the only one. Seems there is still some problems with the Android Market.
yes other than that market glitch this is a nice rom, even better than 5.1 as far as I am concerned
One more problem …..I can’t view HQ videos just get colored waves .I’m using adobe flash version 10.2.156.12
Same market issue with me. Can’t get my downloaded apps to show. Tried the solutions in xda and still no go. Messed around with file permissions and data wipes as well. But the web interface does show my gtablet.
I have a workaround (sort of.) I decided just out of curiousity to use the Gapps installer you can get over on Cyanogenmod for the GTab and installed VeganTab GingerEdition and then used that Gapps installer. It worked better. It now sees all my apps but even after I download and install or restore then they still just say purchased. Because of that it is still never going to update me on new versions. But it is an improvement to not seeing my downloaded apps at all.
This is all fixed in the BETA version…. I am working on BETA right now…. so hopefully in the next day or two… just working through some fixes…. screenshots are now fixed… working on patching up some of the VTL.Launcher bugs and then merge it into VEGAn, etc.
Market has been fixed again.
Sweet! I can’t wait.
My “workaround” was a false alarm. I just went back and is says I don’t have apps. So ignore my above post.
Thanks for all you do. I love this ROM.
great! waiting on beta!! thanks any reason why I can’t view any videos in HQ?
screen freezing up after being idle for awhile using VTL.Launcher getting forced close then having to reboot…switched back to adw launcher
Would your fixes in the Beta version be available as a patch rather than a full blown rom install?
Just had to post and say how terrific your work is! Was running 5.1 and just installed your Gingerbread experimental. Super fast and clean!
Having the same market issue as mentioned above (installs not listed) but look forward to Beta clearing that up as well.
Thanks so much fornall your hard work!
Running 5.1 right now. I was about to flash the last experimental, but I see above that you’re about to finish up the gingerbread Beta. Can’t wait to try it out!! Thanks for putting so much into this amazing ROM! I really appreciate it!
