VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition STABLE RC1
April 11, 2011 181 CommentsRC1? What happened to BETA? I skipped it… this was a MAJOR overhaul of code and features and has really reached the stable build point. So what’s missing? Nothing except High Definition Video Hardware Decoding… not sure if we will ever get that one working right on Gingerbread. Here are some of the feature additions and changes that have been done:
- Switched over to newer Camera Rotation Fix
- Added Tablet Friendly Launcher VTL.Launcher to the launcher options
- Screenshots/DDMS fixed via several commits to Nvidia GIT etc.
- Added in the External Storage Format and Unmount
- Pulled in the Tablet Tweaks
- Modified Tablet Tweaks to not Break our Device or Google API’s
- Fixed up the Fullscreen handling issue
- Edited Statusbar buttons to fit with VEGAn-TAB Styling
- Newer Boot Animation – lowered quality to improve boot performance and speed
- Fixed layout of Launcher and added settings to settings page if default
- Added basic Google Apps to avoid confusion
- Added Tablet version of Quick Office
- Added Basic Tablet Keyboard Layout for English version of Gingerbread Keyboard
- Changed Default Browser User Agent to Desktop
- Added code to remove Phone Settings without losing market functionality
- Lot’s of code cleanups and minor bug fixes
The Google apps has already been applied. Market WILL NOT SHOW in app drawer until you CONNECT TO A WIRELESS NETWORK.
Also installed is the QuickOfficeHD (pulled from adam).
SINCE THIS IS A MAJOR RELEASE VERSION – NO MATTER THE ROM YOU ARE COMING FROM YOU MUST WIPE DATA! Use Titanium Backup or similar to save app data. HOWEVER do NOT restore any system app data…. ie. Wireless Settings, CMParts Setting, etc.
After the first boot, and all the setup screens, PROMPTLY reboot the tablet to finish installation.
Install this using CWM 0.8 only at the moment. Till we can figure out why some tablets have issues with newer CWM versions.
The Latest Flash player from the market now works. Latest google maps now works download from the market. Internal Memory is mapped to SDCard and external SD Card is mapped to SDCard2.

I am going to work on a more specialized installation instructions set. Installation is just like the experimentals through CWM wipe data/cache/dalvik… no exceptions. It could take up to 5 minutes to boot the first time as it is building the dalvik database and cache. Remember to reboot after first boot and setup screens to finish installation.

I brought a new gtablet and updated the stock firmware on it.
then i installed VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition STABLE RC1. but its now stuck in boot screen with 3 birds and not moving forward. it did said that updates installed successfully.
looks like something to do with boot loader..TnT guys have become smart enough and blocked boot loader for any other custom rom.

which says that they have locked boot loader on recent tnt roms. i think thats my case.
My questions:
1.) is there a way to bypass the boot loader?
2.) Did anyone has luck installing this ROM.

Hey, same issue here. Just went through and flashed the ROM and got stuck on the birds. Wish I had realized this before flashing. Total newb to this stuff. I guess I need to load the stock ROM in order to transfer the downgrade file… no clue how to do that.
Can anyone tell me how I can transfer the downgrade file over so that I can get the GingerEdition running?

ALL of this will be for not, if tnt has locked the boot loader, we won’t be able to root these tablets.
I was going to buy one to replace the one stolen, but see no point if I can’t root it.
Unless someone has a solution for this problem? I’d LOVE to hear one.

I also had to nvFlash my tablet to stock, then put CWM back on and go from there.
Use nvflah to go back to the stock rom, install CMW 0.8 ans then install this ram.

Excellent rom!
I’ve found a couple small issues. Some widgets don’t seem to show up on the add widgets list: Bluetooth OnOff and Brightness widget. Also, Google Reader works great except the screen to read the article text, where it reduces to a phone-size screen.

Found the answer to correcting google reader in a forum . . .
Download LCDDensity for Root.
Set the density to 160.
Now my only problem is the unlock dial, but that is a small minor concern compared to the awesome OS running on my g-tab right now.
I fownd out that google reader 0.9.2 works properly, while 0.9.3 doesn’t…

nv fflash with clockwork fixed…just so if anyone else has trouble….also…wish the home menu and back icons where as cool as the battery and wifi icons.

I just installed this on my GTab. It works great! One minor issue is that the apps that I had downloaded previously using Google Market don’t show in the list of apps. I had to search for and find them again. However, given how nice this new version is I didn’t mind.

Ok solved this, applying a permission fix in Clockwork seemed to do the trick.

I installed Flash Player 10.2 from the market. Videos are jerky. Tried 10.1 with the same results. Really like the ROM and its speed.

Really enjoy this ROM, it’s fast and loaded without any problems. However I need the HD video to play apps like CBS News, TV.com, FOX News and local news. Recovered back to your awesome Vegan 5.1.1 with the new VTL.Launcher. Again, Thank you.
I love the new updates, but one request. Could you make the notification icons (right now I can see the usb debugging and the bluetooth ones) right justified? I know this is very “windows-ish” but on windows and on my linux box here, notifications and running app type icons like this go towards the right near the clock in the “system tray” and those would be more at home over there in my opinion.

I just got my G Tab on Saturday, threw Vegan onto it cause everyone said it’s the best. Loved it! Saw the stable Gingerbread version, just threw it on, only had it on for 5 minutes, but hot damn it flys. Didn’t think my G Tab could get any faster and it looks awesome. I’m loving it. Thanks.
Loved the Beta 5.1 ROM and am looking forward to the Ginger. Only noticeable problem for me is the initial boot process… Seems as though we may be hung on the start screen. Will wait some additional time but would certainly enjoy the new ROM based on the previous comments. Hopefully won’t have to backtrack to the 5.1. Any one else notice this? No? Figures….
back down to 5.1 … Would never clear the Ginger start screen. Was looking forward to the non beta but if beta works best than best for beta… WAAAAYYYY to much caffeine today. If anyone has any ideas on how to bump up let me know…
you need to flash to stock rom. and clear the partition. i had the same problem like you.
I’ve been running Cyanogenmod 7 for a month now and was a little hesitant to switch, but really glad I did. VeganTab again shows it’s the superior rom for the G-Tablet. This thing is super fast now.

Have been thinking of the MINOR changes/additions I would like to see:
Working equalizer/dspmanager
Ability to reboot into recovery mode as a menu item on long power button press
And that’s about all I can come up with, because it is such a excellent ROM.
I’m having issues with the audio. When I reboot or power up my G-Tab I don’t get any audio from the speakers, when I plug in headphones, then unplug them, the audio plays just fine out of the speakers. Am I missing a simple setting here?

I am loving the new release GoJimi. I have been playing around with it all afternoon and it has been working great. Then all of a sudden I rebooted and the I get the error from the market now “No downloads from Android Market”. Its no big deal since I have all my apps installed but just thought I would notify you.

Having a problem booting RC1. Verified I’m using 0.8 CWM, wiped cache/data/dalvik, tried partitioning SD but it never goes beyond the GTab Dev screen. After the partitioning try, I rebooted, went to a meeting for an hour and it was still on the Gtab Devs screen. Any ideas?
I had to flash to the stock ROM, reinstall Clockwork and then installing the rom worked.
Where can I get the stock rom? sorta deleted it by accident when I partitioned the SD card.

Adam, think I found the problem. The posts on XDA says “If you have issues booting the first time (ie. boot loops) and you have never run any other gingerbread build before then you probably need to NVFLASH to stock before you can run any GingerBread builds as there is a partition issue from factory on your device…. NVFLASH to stock will repartition everything for you.” I’m downloading nvflash now and will update here with results.
That fixed it. Looking at the vegantab android setup screen now. following is the thread I used to NVFlash back to stock.

reinstalled CWM from the sticky on that and that was it. flash, clear cache/wipe data/clear dalvik and it’s going.

So far, so good. Flash, skype and slideit keyboard installed from market and appear to be working well. I actually like the new keyboard, but am used to swype on my phone and the old version so slideit is for now. Performance seems to be better than 5.1. video is a bit choppy, but still seems better than before.
Not sure what you mean re: keyboard and mouse. I’ve been using both with the experimental release of VEGAn7 for a couple weeks.
This is awesome, but still no keyboard and mouse support,no skype,and when u uninstall an app that was a short cut added to a screen, it will not delete all the way

Have camera issue. Looks like it takes photo ok, however,when go to view in gallery looks ultra low res..
Same Issue with camera. Looks ok right after snap, the freeze is sharp but the picture pulls up in very low rez and what looks like 16 colors. Any reply from DEV yet?
I recently bought the G-tablet off of Craigslist pre-rooted with VeganTab. I’m so glad I did. I’ve been watching this site and installed Gingerbread yesterday. The Gingerbread rom looks and runs like a high performance sports car. Amazing work guys!

I understand skype can be downloaded from the market, but try running it on the new gingerbread, it wont open. Any solutons?
Anyone else having issues with the camera? Perhaps I missed a step. Pics I take come out badly pixelated and with low color depth. It’s very retro!
By the way, other than the camera problem, I love it. Seems a bit snappier to me too. Good work!
Also there is still problems with google maps the latest version downloaded from the market, it stops working, and if you short cut the navigation icon to a screen it disappears after reboot, I love the speed, ill stay with it till it gets better
Camera very low quality, the browser is super kool, it supports full flash and open all full graphic web pages, awesome tablet feel

You saved my Gtab… I love it… best ROM I have seen by far. Easy to get running and set up and the only issue I see was that my USB mouse no longer works.
…also… just confirmed… i havethe same camera problem…and skype doesnt work…
Got it installed and boy, does it makes the G-Tablet fly?
A couple of apps didn’t work (the menu buttons became frozen, even the keyboard is frozen). They are my important apps. I played around with the settings of the launcher and other system settings. I don’t now what I did right, these apps are now working as they should.

I’ve tried *every* other ROM out there for the G-Tablet and I always came back to VEGAn within a day or two. Just flashed VEGAn 7 this morning and I have to say that you have outdone yourself with this one. Amazing job, Gojimi. By far the *absolute* best ROM out there.
hello, I just installed RC7 runs great but i belive have found 2 issues until now. First mouse and keyboard wont run simultaneously.
Another, mouse runs too fast and wont show pointer on screen.
Sound: Wont be any sound until plug/unplug a 3.5mm cable

I had Vegan Gingerbread Edition and then I updated to Cyanogenmod 7. It installed and now my SD card is not there (dead SD card?). I cant install apps or update anything. Please help, Im a newbie!! How do I restore everything so I can go ahead and install this new Rom? It was after installing Cyanogenmod 7 that I ran into this. Any help appreciated!
I’m a noob to all of this but am having a lot of fun. I was on 5.1 with no problems. I went to 7.0 and now I cannot connect to my work wireless. It seems to go into an endless loop of connecting then disconnecting, connecting then disconnecting. The stock did this as well with my router at home. A change of router (it was 7 years old…) and this was fixed. I don’t have that kind of power at work, unfortunately. Any ideas?.

Just a follow up. I put wpa2 permissions on my new router and lost my connection. It started the same connect, disconnect cycle. Hope this helps.
I have the vegan Beta 5.1 and love it the only problem i am having is the wirless signal, before I installed the rom i could be in my room and pick up my wirless. Now that i have put the rom if singal is low it wont connect is goes on and off… Any suggestions someone help would appriciate it…. email me jessie33065@gmail.com

Same problem – wireless looks like it is on, but isn’t. nvFlash stock ROM w/ CWM -> prerequisite wipes and formats -> install new ROM = works fine::: for about 4 months. Lather, rinse repeat. It seems to be software related since a fully clean install fixes the problem.

i had never rooted anything before this either. i found that a combination of both the xda forum/ and youtube to help a great deal. i ran into some small problems trying to flash into vegan from stock, but all the researching gave me confidence to keep going. ran the nvflash to start over and everything worked great.
like many others video playback is broken (all video playback for me) and the camera is all pixelated… I am going back to 5.1.1 hopefully these are fixable ? Otherwise this is a greate rom all of the changes that jimmi has made are wonderfull.. i look forward to a stable version (for me).
You can download qqplayer from the market, it works with RC1
Slingplayer and OrbLive both fail to launch on this release. They launched on 5.1.1 with clemsyn kernel after a a first launch crash. So that wasn’t clear sorry. On 5.1.1 with clemsyns those apps only crashed on initial launch and were fine after that. Haven’t tried clemsyn gingerbread. I’ll try that and report back.
just applied clemsyn and still no luck. Unexpected failure on every launch.
You guys probably are not installing correctly, slingplayer works, I think skype dont work because the telephone software was removed, but we need it to run skype and google voice which is now disabled on this rom
Got hung up on boot animation after update from 5.1, but a second flash seemed to fix it. Seems a bit slow to get past the boot animation. But other than that, great ROM!
OK it’s been working great for the past few days. thinking about updating kernel but not sure i need to or what that the impact will be as far as having to reload stuff or breaking anything.
also, regarding keyboard. i installed the slideit demo amd i like the keyboard layout but not the text field crap

Similar issue here I can successfully flash and boot Beta 5.1 but when I flash ginger RC1 it does not get past the splash screen. Any help is appreciated.
Try doing a full data wipe using cwm, then flash, and before you install any other app install the latest flash first, reboot.
Just Went back to 5.1.1 the best Rom up to date
Ginger RC1 is missing video support so flash is jumpy, and it cant play MPG or large AVI files with 3rd party video playesr, I am able to do everything with the 5.1 Froyo edition why upgrade!!
Ill be reading just in case Flash and video playback improves on the Ginger Edition.
U r not installing it correctly, and you can use qqplayer from the market for video
Don’t take this wrong but you keep saying everyone is installing it wrong and it is not that hard to install so I don’t think everyone is doing it wrong. I did a full wipe including all caches and installed fresh. Video related apps are consistently an issue it seems. So if you did something special on your install that is different than just loading the zip of the rom after all the wipes, please let us know. Otherwise I think there might actually be a video related issue. Has anyone found the cure?

I have tried with Vplayer, RockPlayer, with the 2 players I am able to View videos on my Samsung Epic.
I’m back with the 5.1 and i am playing flash videos and Regular streamed videos.
Qqplayer works great for hd playback. I tried ir with all my videos.
Any chance on some assistance on how to add 3g capabilities back in? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ed S above is right, you need to nvflash to viewsonic stock rom, then flash the new rom.
but during the flash there is a problem. after you flashed the stock rom, it is hard to install clockwork recovery.you need to nvflash the reocvery. there is a link that i found useful:

by the end thanks VEGAn-TAB. This rom is excellent. it is fast and the response is quick. I can show to my wife now, she use Ipad2, and i thought this rom is much better thant her Ipad2
One word: AWESOME!
A significant improvement in user experience over Froyo.
Minor problem: the volume buttons seems to control ringer volume. Also, in sound settings the ringer slider plays music cample but media slider plays ringer sample. The media slider actually controls the media volume.

New G-tab, and new to G-Tab and all this! Successfully went from stock ROM to RC1 with no problems. During first day of use, noticed I was not getting any sound. Required a reboot to restore audio. Noticed others had sound problem too. Other than that, most things are working great. Big improvements over the stock ROM. Of course, some things don’t work…I expect that, but hope things will become more stable as we progress. Thank you for your efforts!

getting a lot of forced closes on the vt-launcher also when in standby/sleep mode upon awaking its frozen up already wiped the cahche/dalvik have even formatted sdcard still have problems also on bootup sometimes its quick other times it takes almost 2 1/2 minutes just my experince thinking 5.1 was more stable

Damn, that startup screen is giving me a huge headache. It has been pulsating for about 5 minutes now.
Ok finally got it to work. Can we please get the old keyboard back. This one is really hard to use , the buttons need to be much bigger.
Any news on the battery drain issue during sleep? Mine drains 3-4% per hour during sleep on VEGAn-TAB 5.1. I’ve just started shutting it down so that I don’t have to charge it every day.

Keeps rebooting on me. How can I fix this?
And it’s not a bootloop. It gets all the way to lockscreen, when I unlock it, it reboots to the VeganTab screen.
Is SDcard2 got fixed in V7? V5.1 keep delete my video, photo files when I saved them in SDcard2.
Love the ROM, best yet. However, can’t get over the low rez camera for now so going back to 5.1.1. Keep up the good work! Will be checking for a fix.
*ISSUE*
I tried to add this to bugtracker but it seems to be offline or hosed at this time.
Every time I open a web page that has embedded video (youtube, news sites, etc…) the browser closes. No FC, just returns me to the home screen. When I reopen browser, it goes to my home page (google by default).
This is really fantastic work!!!!! I tried using Cyangen but it got stuck in a boot loop of some sort. Was annoying, but this worked perfectly and it’s snappy and works exactly how I would expect an Android OS to work (asking me for information on first boot, etc.) Thanks for making my gTablet better.
I flashed this and installed the latest Flash from Market and I still can’t get anything with flash to play on this. Going to wipe data/cache/dalvik again, while not restoring anything from Titanium Backup and see if that works.
Any other idea on what I could be doing wrong? Everything else works perfectly.
I’ve had my gtab for about a month now. I came from 5.1.1 and loved it. You are a true gift to humanity for all your hard work. However, I’ve been using ginger for about a week now. I has been pretty buggy. Random crashing and slow start up. Plus, the video play back has been really bad. I will say that I did not flash back to stock rom before the updating to GE. I’ll try doing this for a fix. Maby a few others having this problem need to do the same.

I was able to successfully install Vegan 7.0.0 and most things seems to work great!!. I am newbe. and using qqplayer got my video working, but I am able to play my mp3 songs. it is telling me the player does not support this type of audio file.

Awesome! First time I have ever tried to do any of this, but have a G Tablet and had to try something that would let me access the market. This works awesome, looks awesome, and I love it! Thank you so much for creating a much better alternative. I couldn’t be happier!
I was running tnt lite 4.4.0, ran nvflash, then updated to 3588 stock, and then installed vegan GE 7 rc1. I have only experienced a single issue till now, when i click on messages under Facebook, it force closes
ok..got it..nothing to do with the OS, the app version itself is buggy…downgrade the app and it works
love everything but the new 3 split keyboard. can’t use it at all and will have to revert if I can’t find another. I saw you had a basic one added in the notes, but don’t see how to turn that on. how do I do that?
If you market is working, search for Gingerbread Keyboard. Person who makes it is Steve or Steven. It is free and works great, had it for phone for several months.

I can’t get USA today to run for the life of me! It won’t show up in the market, then when I downloaded the .apk file, it gives me the whole “process has stopped unexpectedly” every time I try to run it. Tried the market fix 5 times now and still nothing. Aside from some market issues, a very nice ROM!
I switched from TNT and this Rom works more like my EVO. THANK YOU!!
I hooked my MS USB Keyboard up and all works accept when I use my arrows to move around on home screen over app Icon’s I am unable to press enter to start the app once it is highlighted I have to touch the screen. Same goes selecting any links Any Ideas?

I was trying to test the diffrent lock ways, and the rotary, I don’t know how to unblocked. I tried to rote it, but it seem that it doesn have an unblock point.

I love this mod, but had to go back to my old one because of the browser crashing. Once that gets fixed I’m putting it back on and never looking back.
I have Z pad and installed successfully the 5.1.1 version with absolutely no problem. But when tried to do a clean install on Gingerbread version (partitioned the sd) it goes on sys screen and nothing happens! What is my problem?
Notice that i partition to 2048/0…is that right?

I’m having trouble- I installed Vegan GE but nothing happens after the install. What gives? I’m just left in CWM with a it saying ‘install from sdcard complete’

follow the rest of the instructions for the install. lol. press back, wipe user data/cache, then reboot, do all the setup stuff, then reboot again.
i love GE, but when are we gonna get a fix for the camera bugging out? and smoother flash playback/HD video support?

Love the ui, but accelerometer is not working. Daughter loves the game Furfiburb on the phone, but can’t get the accelerometer parts of the gameto work. Also had to wipeand reinstall when a new theme crashed the tablet.
I love the Stable release and was wondering is you have a fix for the camara so that video chat will work. I have been looking everywhere and nothing seems to be stable.
When you use skype or any other service it sounds like a 747 on the audio side but the video is fine.
Any advice would be helpful

I do have the following issues:
(1) Trouble with playing some HD YouTube videos: loads ~3/4 of the way, prompt to restart after the video plays to that point. Same video plays well on my iPad and even on my $85 “MID ePad”!
(2) “Paired but not connected” when trying to tether internet via bluetooth from my iPhone 3GS. Tried apps like “wireless Tether” and “PdaNet”… didn’t work at all.
Tried to search xda-developer site for the solutions, nothing seems to work so far… any suggestion please??? Thanks in advance!
Hi! I, too, am having difficulty with a usb mouse. The Vegantab recognizes it just fine but there is no pointer for the mouse and it moves REALLY fast. Any ideas?
Well built, but would like to no when a update will be built in order to use the HBO go app from the market. Tryed using there web site, but it is to much for playback. Going to keep this build on since it works with everything else I use this for. Thanks

1.2 DOES NOT WORK (for me anyway)
Did full NVFLASH to factory 1.2…went right to CWM and then installed ROM – gets stuck on GTabDevs.
What’s weird is that during the install it just says “installing update” instead of rolling through the little “thanks to devs, vegantab, etc.” that you see when installing 7.0…

With VEgan 7.0 gingeredition the portrait keyboard will not work at all!!!???!!! HELP!!! and Market is constantly force closing!!!

I had a very easy time getting this up and running. Far easier then CM7, or BC. But I stumbled upon an issue I cannot resolve and hope someone may have the same issue as I am.
When I use the market for the first time to download anything, then after the next time I use the market, if reloads into a newer looking market and just Force Closes as it is loading.
I’ve tried market trick work around, such as the force close via application management for market and framework, but the force close issue continues.
Prior to this market overhaul, I had no issues, downloading or searching/browsing. Any ideas?
I had the same problem… its very easy to fix it. Go into your language settings and switch it to English (United States) It worked for me.
Hay. Does anyone know why zpads’ older ROM was so much more louder than Vegans ROMs? (Music) I don’t know if it has to deal with a certain kernel or what. I’m a critical listener and bass drugy, so I want as much power to my headphones as possible without hafting to buy a mobile amp. Also I tried the new Vegan ROM. Two things. The musics not as powerful as zpads ROM and the video playback lags… (has an epilepsy problem) lol. That’s all. Other than that I fell in love with the Vegan ROM.

Installed vegan tab ginger and have been unable to get flash player. (Any version) to work. Installs fine and then nothing in any browser…..it is version 7….any ideas or suggestions to try……thank you
Is there any solution to the accelerometer issue (X is Y, Y is X)? It’s a major issue for game playing and seems like it would be such an easy thing to fix…like maybe some settings in a prop file?
As for this problem being due to the applications being poorly programmed…it doesn’t explain why the same apps work fine in other CM7 ROMS.

Love the ROM. ES File Explorere says i am not rooted? Can’t wireless tether to my android phone. It shows as connected, but no Internet app work? Tried to replace wpa.supplicant but can’t since it seems that i am not rooted? suggestions?
