VTL.Launcher

Presents: VTL.Launcher v.1.6.5

****This release is now under a NEW PACKAGE NAME and no longer SIGNED DEBUG to prep for Market Release. Please uninstall the old version first (unless your ROM came pre-packaged with a version of VTL.Launcher, then just install the new one and when asked which to launch select the one with com.vtlab.launcher under its icon). Sorry for making you do that but it is necessary and the new features and options make it worth it!****

***NOT YET HONEYCOMB COMPATIBLE*** 3.1 Update has added some new issues.

This Launcher is designed with landscape tablets in mind! (that’s not to say it doesn’t also function well in portrait mode….. as it does)

First off this launcher is based on ADW.Launcher’s Source code so I would like to thank anderweb for all the ground work. Most ADW Themes will work for VTL.Launcher.

Features Include:
- tablet layout optimized (smaller screens will need to play with desktop layout and dock icon size)
- elastic scrolling
- 3 individually configurable/toggleable scrollable dock bars
- individual controls per dock for background/reflection/visibility/icon size
- icon size for docks can be set different per orientation
- user folders to place shortcuts to apps, bookmarks, contacts, etc.
- icon changing for user folders and apps.
- quick action items menu when long pressing apps, folders and widgets.
- catalogs for organizing apps in the app drawers
- swipe actions on app drawer to navigate catalogs
- uncataloged catalog where new and uncatagorized apps fall
- 1 to 7 homes screens with sense-like previews
- configurable action bindings (swipe up, swipe down, home button)
- long hold uninstall from trashcan
- moveable trashcan location
- hide home screen icon labels
- auto rotate orientation
- system persistence with configurable locked orientation
- widget size spanning
- scrollable widget support
- live wallpaper support
- fullscreen mode
- backup/restore settings
- compatible with “most” ADW Themes

This should work on virtually any device. Though non large screen devices may have issues with the layouts so you will have to play with the desktop column, row numbers, dock sizes etc.

Bugfix released in 1.6.5 to fix a layout bug on the docks that messed with alignment.

Bugfix released in 1.6.4 to fix 1.6.3 introduced crash

New in Version 1.6.3:

-Icon number per dock is now dynamic depending on dock width, orientation and icon spacing.
-Added Settings for Icon Spacing per Dock per Orientation.
-Icons on Dock now have a dynamically set Layout Alignment/Gravity per Dock per Orientation.
-Added Settings for Icon Alignment/Gravity per Dock per Orientation.
-Cleaned up A TON of old code.
-Fix issue with not showing in market for a few tablet models.

The Launcher is FREE here for XDA members and visitors to our site. It costs 2.99 on the Android Market and with that you will get automatic updates and support further development.

  1. SixShooterz says:

Launcher looks great!! (from screenshots) When I try to hit the Home button the Launcher select screen comes up and flashes rapidly. I’ve noticed this with some of the permissions pages from GAPPS. Any thoughts?

  2. Dave says:

    gojimi,
This launcher is fantastic. You have created something awesome!

  3. Sm0k3d-0uT says:

lil bit of n00b but how do you get to launcher settings? I’m running VEGAn 1.0 beta 5.1.1

  4. SixShooterz says:

I have a request, can go on the back burner. In the MIUI launcher for phones, there are options to sort items in a folder by name, date, usage, etc. Would it be possible to get that added in at some point?

BTW, I wiped my tab and reloaded everything and the issue mentioned above seems to have disappeared! :-)

  5. comhack says:

Another great job GoJimi. I am loving the new launcher on 5.1.1.

    Thanks a lot.

    • meyergre says:

Would it be possible to add the capability to launch an activity in addition to an apps for the slide-up and slide-down ? e.g. for those who use several different homes… it would be create :-)

  6. Mark says:

I like this a lot! And it works great, even in this early beta. Many thanks.

One thing that would be nice: a visual indication at the edges of the dock, indicating when there additional icons that can be revealed by scrolling the dock.

  7. comhack says:

One thing I have noticed is that if you have your statusbar set to hide, it reappears sometimes and you have to restart VTL for it to hide again. Other than that the launcher, it completely stable and the best launcher I have used so far.q

  8. ThaWhat says:

My new launcher of choice. Loving the quick launch on the bottom. Good work!

  9. Matt says:

Multi picture live wallpaper has abug with this launcher. When using a folder as the image source it shows a different picture on each screen instead of the same one.

  10. Not Craig says:

This is awesome. Works great on a portrait-oriented phone. Responsiveness is phe-frickin-nomenal

  11. eric says:

I am not very smart. This thing rocks, but I cannot seem to figure out two things.

    1. How do I delete something I have put on the desktop?
    2. Is there a way to place icons in various places on the desktop?

    Thanks~

  12. comhack says:

BTW Jimi, is there a way to change the theme? I know this is based upon ADW but the themes do not show up in the Select your Theme section of the settings.

    • comhack says:

OR would this mess up the menu being across the bottom.

      Thanks again GoJimi!!

      • GoJimi says:

comhack, Make sure you are on the latest version. 1.3+ has ADW theme support so if the theme has a new graphic built in for the dockbar it will be themed. However the new left-hand and right-hand docks that are “almost” completed will not be themed unless the themer actually supports VTL.Launcher. I am sure I will post up more info on themeing once things are finalized a bit so that others in the community can if they want to create themes for the launcher.

        • comhack says:

Latest version of what? I am just using the VTL.Launcher that you posted. I just thought that adw themes would work since there is an option for theming in the VTL options. I am happy with the launcher the way it is but just seen the option and was trying to mess around with it.

          Thanks GoJimi!!!!

  13. G-Tab Randy says:

This is awesome! Flick it down, brings down the notification bar. Flick it up (on any position on the screen), and the notification bar shows. I like that there are a lot of choices on the settings (the pre-installed setting works well already) but if you want to personalize it, you have a choice. Great job!

    • G-Tab Randy says:

My G-Tab did not boot properly today and it kept on Force closing the launcher. I did a restore and went back to the Vegan tab website, then lo and behold, there was an update from 1.3 to 1.4. It has only been 2 days since I downloaded the Launcher. The 1.4 is better IMO but need some learning to do a personalized setup. Again, thanks for another step forward :D

  14. Carlos says:

Works great on Vegan 5.1 and Multipicture Live Wallpaper app

  15. eyahn says:

srsly, good job! i was starting to write this myself! thank god i came across this! :D

  16. georg says:

I wery like that launcher, but could you make the appdrawer fully transperant so you can see your wallpaper, then i would be the best launcher ever!!!! Or add a setting where you can put wallpaper for your appdrawer.

    • GoJimi says:

georg, Your requested option is already implemented. Just go in to the settings for the launcher and select the drawer settings. Then scroll to the bottom to background color. The scroll bar under the color wheel changes the transparency(alpha) of the color of the background. The further the bar is to the left the more transparent it is. Make sure you press in the center of the color wheel when you are done to save your setting!

      -Enjoy

  17. georg says:

    Soryy for the last post

  18. mark says:

Great job love this on notion ink Adam. Is there a way to reduce font size on status bar? This is really good!

    • GoJimi says:

Glad you like it. The Font Size on the statusbar is controlled by whatever ROM you have installed on your device so in the context of this launcher I can’t help you there sorry.

  19. Bryan says:

Great work on the launcher. Looks great and works really well.
Just one suggestion can you add a proper calendar and a friends stream app to combine Facebook and twitter. Something similar to those Widgets on HTC sense and LauncherPro plus.
Really like Vegan 5.1. Keep it up, its all just awesome.

  20. prana22 says:

+1 The only thing that keeps my on LauncherPro is the widgets.

  21. Greg says:

Discovered Vegan rom and this launcher for my Notion Ink Adam this weekend. Love it! I have switched from the paid version of Launcher Pro and doubt I’ll look back!

Is there a way to control the number of home screen pages? With the amount of stuff that fits on a10.1″ screen, I find myself happy with 3 page.

    Thanks so much!

  22. poymeister says:

If you do a tiny “micro” down swipe gesture in the bottom dock bar, it hides by sliding off the bottom, and I can’t figure out how to make it re-appear. I have to restart the launcher to get it back. Anyone?

  23. poymeister says:

If you swipe down and close the bottom dock bar, and then display previews, and then close previews, I get a right side dock bar that has “web”, “app drawer”, and “phone”. Weird.

This is still my favorite launcher. Thanks Gojimi!

  24. Chance says:

How do you install it from the .zip file?

  25. Howie says:

    Fantastic!!

  26. Joe says:

I’ve got what I believe to be a bug to report. If I set the swipe down and swipe up actions to NONE, and swipe down (or miss my click!) on the icons, it will still hide the launcher bar..

otherwise, this is definitely my new favorite launcher for my CM7 running Nook Color!

  27. jacktackle says:

Hey Master, this is what i was waiting for all this while. small icons. with this the tablet looks more like a tablet then an oversized phone.

thanks! keep the good job going..

  28. Andy says:

any way to get the wallpaper not to crop so much on the Xoom using Dodol as the wallpaper utility.
Agenda widget scrolling intermittent and intermittently caused Honeycomb notification area to pop up when trying to scroll the agenda widget

  29. Jared says:

I thought this was a .apk file…How do I install from zip?

  30. GoJimi says:

This is an apk… if you get it as a zip file windows is funny particularly some browsers are funny and rename it as a zip… you need to rename it back to an .apk making sure it doesn’t end up as a .apk.zip … man I hate windows sometimes.

  31. J.M.L. says:

Does not instal on a generic flytouch clone running Android 1.6

  32. Brian Scott Oplinger says:

I use the resize widget function of Zeam all the time so want to suggest that functionality. Just because I have lots of screen doesn’t mean I want it wasted. :)

  33. Ed Sambo says:

This is a great looking Launcher and really makes my Galaxy Tab look like a tab at last.

Just one query, it installs fine using Root Explorer and runs without a problem. My only issue is that it does not create an icon in the applications list so I can only “get” to it via the home screen “Complete Action” screen.

As I like to test different launchers I really would like to be able have VTL as an icon on screen.

Great work to date, looking forward to see what you do next!!

  34. Mark Wilson says:

Thanks for the great work on the launcher, it works great on my Gtab! I just got it a few days ago, put on VEGAn, and I’m wondering if there is a link for the adapted English version of Gingerbread Keyboard for those of us who are not ready to venture into the waters of the VEGAn-TAB Ginger Edition? Thanks again!

  35. Scott Reedstrom says:

Great piece of code. Suggestion though..any chance of different soft buttons onthe notification bar? Or some options? My preference isfor something a little lower key – i thought the adw keys were really good. But overall it seems great.

  36. Des says:

Is there a way to either change the display icon for a folder down in the app drawer or to have the labels show up down there? I’d like to put a folder for Google applications down there, but want to be able to ID what is in the folder, as there will be one or two more folders in that spot.

    TIA…

  37. Snuffy says:

Absolutly great… this is by far the best launcher on my tab and I have tried them all… well most of em anyway ;-)

  38. rcjpth says:

Can it be installed in TNT 4.2.4? Any other side app APK if it runs on TNT 4.2.4?

    tx,
    rcjpth

  39. Sahakar says:

@gogimi – I can’t find the Uninstall option for 1.5. In manage applications i get a greyed out option for uninstall. Can you please help on how do I uninstall the older version so I can install your latest.

    • mmenzie says:

I can’t find the uninstall option either….. you said you have an uninstall but it is “greyed out”… well that more than what i have…. where the “uninstall” button should be, all i have is a greyed out “Cancel” button. i really want the new version but can’t seem to figure out how to uninstall this one.

      • GoJimi says:

Sorry about the confusion on this. I updated the original post. Please uninstall the old version first (unless your ROM came pre-packaged with a version of VTL.Launcher, then just install the new one and when asked which to launch select the one with com.vtlab.launcher under its icon). So if you are on VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition or some other ROM that had VTL preinstalled there is no need to uninstall the previous version. You will just need to select the new one when you hit the home button for the first time.

  40. Mac Sokulski says:

I downloaded the file from here and installed it on my wifi moto xoom. All was working fine, until the widgets started to disappear from the screen. So I decided to give the xoom a hard reset ( power+volume up). Now xoom is showing the honeycomb start video and nothing elso. The email notifications seem to work, but the xoom is completely unusable. Any ideas?

  41. Bryan says:

love the launcher. lots of tablet friendly features. Although one thing i that temps me to go back to launcherpro is transition effects. I personally like 3d features and thought transition effects would be a cool suggestion.

  42. jeff says:

M Widgets keep didappearing on reboot and I have to delete them and rearrange. Any ideas?

  43. meyergre says:

any chance to get an extension to 12 columns in landscape mode ?

  44. Sani says:

Hey can i use this on my cruz reader 103?

  45. TonyZ says:

FYI…VTL doesn’t work on Wopad Eclair 2.1 (I’m sorry to say)

  46. hchxoom says:

Installed 1.6.5 today on xoom to test, knowing it isn’t fully ready – awesome launcher, and can’t wait for it to develop further and stabilize. Have had very few problems so far. The biggest nuisances are inconsistent/slow scrolling within widgets and strange behavior around widget sizing and placement on home screen. However, the overall app is so much better than stock I’ll stick with it.

    A couple requests:
Added a good number of categories for apps – would love it if a list of those csts would come up (alphabetized) for selection when I hit the app drawer icon, rather than having to swipe through screens.
Also would love to know that the widget is on the first picture in your lineup above is -the one for wireless, bt, gps, etc

  47. Hevroth says:

First off, I want to say I love this launcher and the amount of customization allowed is awesome.

Next, I’d like to make a request. PLEASE make an option to simply *hide* apps from the app tray. Launcher Pro has an option like this and it works great.

The custom catalogs does not address this issue very well because in order to hide certain apps, you need to create a custom catalog to exclude them from. But– anytime you install a new app, it’s simply placed in the “all items” catalog, requiring you to manually move it over with all your other apps. So, if there are only a few apps you want to hide from your tray but leave the rest alone, then basically you’ll have to manually move each and every program you install, to your custom catalog.

It’d be nice if we could simply hide certain apps entirely. Thanks.

  48. Jerome says:

    Howdy!

Is there an edit to the startup.txt or build.prop file that I can make to identify my G-Tab as something else?

There are Market apps that I can’t download because the Market sees the GTAB as incompatible.

  49. Kyo171 says:

Hi good work on the launcher, very nice indeed. I notice that everytime i start up my gtablet as in i power on it, some dock icons loses its reflection effect, i have to go into vtl settings and uncheck and check back anyone of the reflections settings to get all dock icon reflections back.

FYI: i am using beasty/clemsyn froyo rom

  50. anon says:

    So is this project kaput?

  51. tokyostomp says:

i tired 1.6.5 on kindle fire and it fc on me
